My World Tuesday - Church

This time I'll write a little about one of the two Churches closest to Nysäter. For other peoples My world Tuesday, please visit That's my world.

Gillberga Church (or Church of Gillberga?)

In the east part of this church are some walls after a absidchurch in romanesque style - One of few maintained in Värmland. The first church were probably built late in the 12th century or in the beginning of the 13th century. The material used were limestone from Kinnekulle that they transported over Vänern to Gillbergasjön (the lake of Gillberga).

Between 1837 and 1840 the belltower now used was built.

The altar is from 1665.

In the tower hangs a churchbell from the 12th century. It is one of the oldest in Sweden and it is still in use.

The baptismal font is from 1941. The church also have parts of two older fonts, made in soapstone, from the middel ages.
